Thus, binocular in view, the exchange is delivered to us in an international setting of Chinese who have journeyed to the West, speaking with thoughtful men in a tavern of a city which was once the heart of Medieval Europe. 

We listen alternately to different Chinese and Spaniards, one per chapter, and are reminded of the words left to us by the Chinese sages of long ago, that "to read ten thousand books is not as good as traveling ten thousand li." These pages divulge lessons gleaned from a pilgrimage of well more than ten thousand leagues, however, and we gather the best of both worlds.
